  • Family medicine starting salaries tick up slightly in recruitment analysis

The average starting salary offered to physicians specializing in family medicine rose from $271,000 to $275,000 over the last year, according to an analysis by recruiting and staffing firm AMN Healthcare. Meanwhile, the average starting salary offer for physicians across all specialties fell from $406,000 to $403,000.

AMN Healthcare’s Physician Solutions division (formerly Merritt Hawkins) did the analysis based on a sample of 1,420 search engagements from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025.

The report broke down family medicine starting salary offers by academic and non-academic positions and found that the 1.3% year-over-year uptick in average starting salaries was driven exclusively by non-academic jobs, which rose from $274,000 to $290,000. Average starting salaries for academic positions in family medicine fell from $249,000 to $230,000.
