The principles Gordon Moore, MD, and John Wasson, MD, described in “The Ideal Medical Practice Model: Improving Efficiency, Quality and the Doctor-Patient Relationship” [September 2007] coincide closely with my own. As a family medicine resident, experiencing these unique practice models in the midst of managed care-based residency training can be daunting. Our program graduated a resident many years ago who now has a retainer-fee-based solo practice. I wanted to be a family physician to form meaningful patient relationships and deliver unparalleled quality of care, but I'm concerned about whether that can be done in 10 minutes or less. This article and others like them give me the motivation to stick to my principles, provide great care and achieve an appropriate quality of life for my family and myself.
