    Matthew Adkins, D.O.

    Matthew Adkins, D.O., a family physician in Columbus, Ohio, is the new physician member of the American Academy of Family Physicians board of directors. The AAFP represents 130,000 physicians and medical students nationwide. Adkins was elected to a one-year term by the new physician constituency during the AAFP National Conference of Constituency Leaders and was confirmed by the AAFP’s governing body, the Congress of Delegates.

    A new physician is a doctor in the first seven years of practice following residency completion. As the new physician member of the board of directors, Adkins represents the interests and opinions of the new physician constituency to the board and the Congress of Delegates. He also advocates on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.

    Adkins is an assistant program director at Grant Family Medicine Residency in Columbus, Ohio, with clinical and teaching emphasis in LGBTQ+ and sexual health, HIV, addiction, and health equity. He also serves as an adjunct clinical assistant professor at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Dublin, Ohio.

    An AAFP member since 2017, Adkins served as a delegate to the Congress of Delegates, Member Constituencies in fall 2023, co-convener, LGBTQ+ Constituency in spring 2023 and alternate delegate to Congress of Delegates, Member Constituencies. Adkins also serves as co-chair of the OhioHealth Gender Affirmation Council, where he leads strategic planning and goal deployment for an interprofessional team of providers and associates to improve gender-affirming services.

    Adkins has been active in his state chapter, where he served as the student delegate from Ohio for the AAFP National Conference for Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students. He has also served on various committees at the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and holds the credentials of AAHIVS from the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

    Adkins earned his bachelor's degree in music at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. He later earned his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree in 2014 from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.
