    Derek B. Southwick, MD

    Derek B. Southwick, MD, is the resident physician member on the board of directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The AAFP represents 128,300 physicians and medical students nationwide. Southwick was elected to a one-year term by the National Congress of Family Medicine Residents and was confirmed by the governing body of the AAFP, the Congress of Delegates.

    Dr. Southwick represents the interests and opinions of the new physician constituency to the board and the Congress of Delegates. He also advocates on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.

    Dr. Southwick is a family medicine resident at Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana. He received his medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine and is originally from Idaho Falls, Idaho. He received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University—Idaho.

    He has strengthened his passion for global health through medical mission trips to Costa Rica and Mexico as well as church missions to the Dominican Republic, where he helped expand access to care.
