The AAFP’s leadership structure reflects our goals and values as an organization—diverse skillsets, experiences and points of view—working together for the best possible outcomes.
The following groups and leaders help shape the AAFP. We encourage members to get involved in leadership as early as possible, with student representation on the Board of Directors, Congress of Delegates and commissions being a few among many opportunities.
Board of Directors
Experienced family physicians who understand day-to-day life in primary care, the Board of Directors' mission mirrors that of AAFP: improve the health of patients, families and communities by serving the needs of members with professionalism and creativity.
Executive management team
This group leads our day-to-day operations, from membership relations and education to marketing and research, so we can best serve you.
Congress of Delegates
Delegates represent the Academy in the committee hearings of advocacy, education, health of the public and science, organization and finance, and practice enhancement at the National Conference of Constituency Leaders.
AAFP commissions
Our commissions make recommendations to the Board regarding policy, development of new programs and projects and improvements to current activities.
Resident leaders
Making significant contributions to family medicine, residents serve as elected or appointed leaders.
Student leaders
With a focus on the future, medical students serve as elected or appointed leaders.
