Samuel E. Mathis, MD, FAAFP

Samuel E. Mathis, MD, FAAFP, a family physician at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, serves as the new physician member of the American Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors. The AAFP represents 130,000 physicians and medical students nationwide. Mathis was elected to a one-year term by the new physician constituency during the AAFP National Conference of Constituency Leaders and was confirmed by the AAFP’s governing body, the Congress of Delegates.

A new physician is a doctor in his or her first seven years of practice following residency completion. As the new physician member of the board of directors, Mathis represents the interests and opinions of the new physician constituency to the AAFP Board of Directors and the Congress of Delegates. He also advocates on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the US health care system.

Mathis serves as assistant professor at the School of Medicine and Family Medicine Residency Program in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He is also the medical director at the UTMB Employee Health Services.

A member since 2012, Mathis has served on several Texas Academy of Family Physicians committees and boards, including the TAFP Board of Directors, Committee on Membership Engagement and Resident Representative to the AAFP Congress of Delegates. He is currently the president-elect of the Galveston County Medical Society.

Mathis earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, and completed his residency at Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in Sugar Land, Texas.

Mathis is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He has the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education.
