Among the top articles published in AFP last year were those nominated for the Kemp Award, which the AAFP presents each year to recognize the most outstanding article written by family physicians, as judged on the basis of quality of editorial presentation, scientific substance, originality of thought and relevance to family practice.

The Kemp Award has been presented annually since 1986 and carries a $1,000 honorarium. It is named in memory of Walter H. Kemp, who served as managing publisher of AFP for 15 years. Candidates are screened by the medical editors and other editorial staff members. Several finalists are presented to the AAFP Commission on Continuing Medical Education, which selects the top candidate for recommendation to the AAFP Board of Directors. With the approval of the Board of Directors, the award is presented at the Scientific Assembly.

We're pleased to announce that the 14th annual Kemp Award goes to Rebecca F. Moran, M.D., for her article “Evaluation and Treatment of Childhood Obesity,” which was published in the February 15, 1999, issue of AFP. This article was selected from among 170 clinical reviews published in AFP last year.

The runners up are “Vasectomy Techniques,” by Timothy L. Clenney, LCDR, MC, USN, and James C. Higgins, CDR, MC, USN (July 1999), “Current Trends in Cervical Ripening and Labor Induction,” by Jefferson H. Harmon, Jr., LT COL, USAF, MC, FS, and Andrew Kim, MAJ, USAF, MC (August 1999) and “Management of Acute Gastroenteritis in Children,” by David M. Burkhart, M.D. (December 1999). For a quick look back at these four distinctive articles, you might visit AFP's Web site (www.aafp.org/afp).

Dr. Moran is currently in private practice at Dinsdale Medical Group in Gilbert, Ariz. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, and completed a family medicine residency at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Our congratulations and thanks go to Dr. Moran for the award-winning review, to the authors of the other finalist articles, and to the many other authors who have made so many excellent contributions to AFP.
