We are pleased to announce the new free mobile app for “AFP By Topic.” This app allows you to quickly access the best current information that AFP has to offer on the most commonly sought topics from virtually anywhere using almost any Web-enabled mobile device. The “ AFP By Topic” app can be downloaded from the Android Market ( now, and will be available soon at the App Store ( At press time, the date of the App Store availability was uncertain.

AFP By Topic: Editors' Choice of Best Current Content” makes the best content from AFP Online for 45 clinical topics available in one place for your convenience. The editors update these collections continually to ensure that they remain as current and useful as possible. These collections include pertinent AFP articles and departments, summaries of practice guidelines from major medical organizations, patient education handouts, articles from Family Practice Management, and the American Academy of Family Physicians' Metric practice improvement modules. To aid in answering clinical questions, the content in each topic collection is organized into categories, such as screening and diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and complications.

How to Navigate the App

The main page of this application is a menu of the clinical topics included in “AFP By Topic” (Figure 1A).

  • Clicking on a topic takes you to a menu screen of the categories within that particular topic (Figure 1B).

  • Clicking on a category takes you to a menu screen of all content within that category (Figure 1C).

  • Clicking on any of these items launches a Web browser and displays the selected content (Figure 1D). An Internet connection is required to view the content.

We hope this app is the first of many AFP-related apps. It's another way we are striving to improve the usability of the vast collection of clinical resources available on the AFP Web site. If you have ideas for additional apps, suggestions for topics to add to the “AFP By Topic” collection, or general comments for making AFP Online work better for you, please let us know by e-mailing us at
