Whether you want to nominate someone or you're a potential nominee, here's the where, when and how.

Nomination before the COD meeting

The nominating committee considers applications for nomination to the AAFP Board of Directors. Applications may be submitted by potential nominees themselves, as well as by groups such as chapters, member constituencies and member interest groups. Learn more about qualifications for the board.

Nomination during the COD meeting

The COD meets annually during FMX. During the opening session, nominations are put forth for president-elect, speaker and vice speaker, and for vacancies on the Board of Directors. The floor is open for additional nominations at that time, as well as at the close of the session on the day before the election.

Before a candidate is nominated from the floor during the COD session, he or she must present a written letter of nomination from his or her chapter to the speaker of the COD (or the speaker's designee.) At the time of nomination, candidates nominated from the floor will have the opportunity to distribute the same information to the COD as the previously announced candidates: official letter of nomination from the candidate's chapter, personal statement, biographical information, curriculum vitae and photo.

New physician, resident and student candidates

The new physician, resident and student candidates for the AAFP Board of Directors are nominated by their respective conferences and are introduced to the COD. The new physician candidate is nominated by the National Conference of Constituency Leaders. The resident and student candidate are nominated by the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Student Members.
