Reparative or Conversion Therapy
The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) opposes the provision, referral, endorsement, or facilitation of reparative or conversion therapy. Physicians should not engage in interventions that attempt to change or suppress a patient’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Such practices are inconsistent with evidence-based care and violate ethical obligations to avoid harm, respect patient autonomy, and promote health and well-being.
The AAFP supports affirming, evidence-based care that addresses mental health needs, family dynamics, and the effects of stigma or discrimination without pathologizing sexual orientation or gender diversity. The AAFP supports the right of family physicians to decline providing resources or engaging with patient requests for conversion therapy services. The AAFP advocates for policies and systems that protect patients, particularly minors, from exposure to harmful, non-evidence-based practices.
