How to obtain and report CME credit
Learn how to obtain and report CME credit and get transcripts and letters of participation for your CME activities.
Reporting credit for your CME activities is an important part of maintaining your CME requirements for your AAFP membership. Even if CME is used for other purposes, such as for maintaining American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) certification, it must be reported to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) to count towards your re-election.
Some providers report your CME credit to us automatically, but not all do.
How to report CME for different activities
At the conclusion of a live AAFPCME activity, a link will be provided to assist you in reporting your CME for that activity. Log in to your account and complete the form.
Obtaining a transcript for CME activities
AAFP members can view, edit, print or email transcripts of all CME activities they have reported since 2002.

Reporting CME to other organizations
By keeping your full CME record with the AAFP, we make it easy to report CME to other organizations and keep track of your educational history. By reporting your CME to us:
You fulfill a requirement of AAFP membership.
You maintain a centralized CME record.
You have 24-hour access to your CME transcript.
You can email a copy of your CME transcript to other organizations to which you belong.
Upon your request, we will send a copy of your CME record to any third party—including the ABFM or other entities. Since the AAFP considers your CME record to be your property, we will only release it to another party with your written authorization. Authorization can be faxed or mailed to the AAFP Member Resource Center.
FAQ about obtaining and reporting CME credit
There are three ways to remove the duplicated credit:
- Access your CME transcript at www.aafp.org/account/cme-and-events and click on the delete button next to the duplicated activity.
- Call the AAFP Member Resource Center at (800) 274-2237.
- E-mail us at aafp@aafp.org.
To be listed in our database, the provider of the activity must submit an application for CME credit to the AAFP, and it must be approved by the AAFP's CME Credit System department.
If an activity is approved by the ACCME but is not in our database, you may report it as AAFP Elective credit. On “Approval by other organization,” select the American Medical Association (AMA).
- Click "Search Self-study Activities."
- Enter the date you completed the module.
- Enter a keyword from the title of the module.
- Enter American Board of Family Medicine as the provider.
- Click "Search Self-study."
- Select the appropriate module(s).
- Click "Report Selected Activities."
Limit your search criteria to the date of the activity and the state in which the activity was held. If you are still unable to find the activity, send a copy of the certificate to the AAFP Member Resource Center by emailing us at aafp@aafp.org or faxing it to (913) 906-6075. The AAFP Member Resource Center will update your transcript and, when necessary, work with the CME provider to ensure our course file and your transcript are accurate.
The FMCLA has been approved for 30 AAFP Prescribed credits. The CME credit will be awarded after successfully completing the FMCLA.
Activities cannot receive more than the maximum number of credits for which they are certified. For example, an activity reported as being worth 11 credits may be reduced to 10.75 credits, because that is the maximum number of credits for which that activity is certified by the AAFP.
All CME credits must be recorded in quarter-hour increments. If you report credits in any other increment, it will be rounded to the nearest quarter hour. For example, credits reported at 7.33 will be rounded to 7.25.
The activity will be recorded as AAFP Elective credit, typically with a generic title beginning with "Formal Activity."
