Intersectionality in Healthcare Member Interest Group

Established: February 2021

The Intersectionality in Healthcare Member Interest Group (MIG) provides a forum for members to organize and advocate for health care equity, racial and social justice and discuss their personal experiences with implicit and explicit bias.

Who can join this MIG

Participation is open to any AAFP member interested in or seeking to learn more about health care equity.

Intersectionality in Healthcare MIG objectives

  • Assist the AAFP in membership recruitment/retention of family physicians with shared professional interest.
  • Provide a safe space for providers from marginalized groups to discuss their personal experiences with implicit and explicit bias
  • Provide a space for allies to learn about the struggles of their colleagues and contribute to a community of support for those providers
  • Provide a place to organize and advocate for health care equity, racial and social justice
  • Suggest and advocate for CME opportunities to educate the AAFP members the impact of systems of oppression on the health of patients and providers

Long-term MIG goals

  • Integration of health disparities into every CME that the AAFP offers. Can be based on population served by the presenter.
  • Integration of social justice into every keynote address at AAFP conferences
  • Integrating health disparities into all of the AAFP Residency Curricula and removing “Urban Medicine” as a catch-all for health disparities as they exist everywhere.
  • Formalizing a leadership pipeline for members from underrepresented minorities
  • An AAFP leadership that reflects oppressed peoples in both our membership and patient populations.

MIG officers

  • Overseen By: Commission on Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness in Family Medicine
