Lifestyle Medicine Member Interest Group

The Lifestyle Medicine Member Interest Group (MIG) increases networking opportunities for members who have a passion to improve health through the focus on healthy lifestyle, and foster communication and dialogue on debates in nutrition, fitness and other self-care areas. You’ll discuss evidence-based lifestyle approaches to common conditions (e.g. obesity, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, etc.) seen in family medicine.
Who can join this MIG
Participation is open to any AAFP member interested in or seeking to learn more about lifestyle medicine.
Lifestyle Medicine MIG objectives
- Increase networking opportunities to members who have a passion to improve health through the focus on healthy lifestyle.
- Foster communication and healthy dialogue on debates in nutrition, fitness and other self-care areas.
- Discuss evidence-based lifestyle approaches to common conditions (e.g. obesity, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, etc.) seen in family medicine.
- Increase the awareness of the Lifestyle Medicine MIG to medical students and residents who have a keen interest in healthy lifestyles to improve the recruitment and retention of family physicians.
- Assist the AAFP in membership recruitment and retention of family physicians who have a passion to improve health through focus on a healthy lifestyle.
Long-term MIG goals
- Educate and empower Physicians, Residents and Students about healthy lifestyles, in particular, evidence based approaches to nutrition, physical activity, sleep, mindfulness, and stress management.
- Improve the health and wellness of AAFP members by education, active engagement and member challenges to reduce burnout and restore the joy in practicing medicine.
- Advocate for the health of the public by advocating for an increase focus on lifestyle interventions in AAFP policy.
- Help empower our patients to take charge of their health by activating their own self-healing mechanisms using motivational interviewing and health coaching techniques.
