Medical Aid in Dying Member Interest Group

Established: July 2020

The Medical Aid in Dying Member Interest Group (MIG) serves as a resource for information about the practice of medical aid in dying and provides a community where members can share best practices, discuss challenging clinical cases, and enlist advice from colleagues.

Who can join this MIG

Participation is open to any AAFP member interested in or seeking to learn more about medical aid in dying.

Medical Aid in Dying MIG objectives

  • Assist the AAFP in membership recruitment/retention of family physicians with shared professional interest
  • Promote evidence-based education for medical aid in dying (MAiD): standards of care, clinical practice guidelines, medication protocols, and information about individual state laws
  • Assist family physicians with information on the interface of MAiD with palliative care and hospice programs
  • Educate family physicians about appropriate response(s) to patient requests of end-of-life care options, including MAiD
  • Promote the use of national and local resources as referral sources for MAiD

Long-term MIG goals

  • To provide ongoing support and clinical information to the growing number of AAFP members who currently or in the future will integrate medical aid in dying into their clinical practices
  • To foster respect for colleagues whose shared values lead them to different ethical conclusions about medical aid in dying in the context of end-of-life care
  • To integrate the practice of medical aid in dying in end-of-life care options (hospice and palliative care)
