AAFP national dues payment policy and dues deductibility
Your annual AAFP membership dues are an investment, and you may have questions about them.
We can help you understand the AAFP’s national dues payment policy, your payment options and what is tax deductible.
AAFP membership dues payment policy and options
Ensure your AAFP membership continues without interruption each year, by checking the automatic membership renewal option box. After we receive your approval for automatic dues renewal, the AAFP will automatically charge your membership dues each year at that year’s current rate to the credit card number you provided.
If you sign up for our full dues payment plan (automatic renewal), your full membership dues will be charged in November each year.
You will receive an email confirmation when the charge is applied to your credit card.
If you sign up for the installment payment plan, your monthly payment will be calculated based on the balance due for your national, chapter and local dues.
For participation in the installment payment plan, the amount of total dues owed must be no less than $110.
- The AAFP will automatically calculate your monthly payments and spread the balance of your dues over January through December of the dues year.
- If you sign up after January, your dues balance will be spread over the months between the current month and December of the dues year.
Installment charges will occur on the 10th of each month. You will receive email confirmation for the charges and can cancel this service any time by contacting us at aafp@aafp.org or (800) 274-2237.
The AAFP charges a nonrefundable $15 convenience fee to members who participate in the installment payment plan. This fee will only be charged once per dues year.
By signing up to pay your membership dues in installments, you also agree to pay this fee once per dues year. The fee will appear as a separate charge on your credit card and will not be included in the breakdown of monthly dues payments charged to your credit card. A receipt for this convenience fee payment can be found at My Financial Transactions.
If you are renewing your membership or making installment payments using a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card, a service used by the AAFP (Visa Account Updater or Mastercard Automatic Billing Updater) may provide us with updates—such as a new card number or expiration date—to the account information you previously provided us. We will update our files and use the new information when we process your renewal/installment payment. We will not receive updated information if your account has been closed.
You can cancel any time by contacting the AAFP Member Resource Center at aafp@aafp.org or (800) 274-2237.
Are AAFP dues tax deductible?
AAFP membership dues are not tax deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.
However, they may be tax deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses. A portion of dues is not deductible as an ordinary and necessary business expense to the extent that the AAFP engages in lobbying.
If you are enrolled in the installment payment plan, the $15 convenience fee is not tax deductible as a charitable contribution. But $12.90 may be tax deductible as an ordinary and necessary business expense.

Of the total amount paid in California chapter dues, $24 will go to the Family Physicians Political Action Committee (FP-PAC) of the California Academy of Family Physicians (AFP). This does not apply to physicians who graduated from a family medicine residency program in 2025. Please contact the California AFP if you do not want this amount to be used for FP-PAC political purposes; it will go to the California AFP’s general fund instead. The California AFP assumes that your dues are paid by you individually. Please contact the California AFP or call (415) 345-8667 if your dues are NOT paid by you directly or if you are a foreign national without a green card.
