During a system upgrade from Friday, Dec. 5, through Sunday, Dec. 7, the AAFP website, on-demand courses and CME purchases will be unavailable.

  • Make the most out of FMX

FMX stands for Family Medicine Experience, and that last word—experience—is truly a description of the event. FMX is more than a conference. It’s a way to find rejuvenation and community, and sharpen skills that can help your career and your patients.

While FMX is a great event, it’s also a big one with lots of details to consider. No matter how many FMX events you’ve been to before, every year is unique. And since FMX only happens once a year, making the most out of your experience is important. Here are some of our tips to make FMX 2025 your best one yet.

Physician’s journey: Find your FMX learning style

Community is a big part of FMX and family medicine as a whole. FMX has always been a place where member interest groups can get together, and meeting other passionate family physicians and medical professionals is a large part of the event.

New this year is the Physicians Journey quiz, which provides an exciting way to connect. This new feature can help you find learning sessions that speak to you and introduce you to other physicians with similar interests.

This quiz is a tool for self-reflection, designed to help you pause and reconnect with what you find most meaningful in your work. Then, you can use that insight to personalize your FMX experience. These archetypes can help provide even more meaning to an already meaningful experience.

There are six different physician archetypes: Creator, Thinker, Connector, Adaptor, Trailblazer, Anchor and Explorer. Take the quiz and find out which one you are!

Education types for all learning styles

Every FMX attendee processes information in a different way. We’ve designed our education to appeal to all kinds of learning styles and physician archetypes. From in-depth workshops to group sessions, there’s a session that matches up with you how learn best.

    • BLAST sessions: This fast-paced panel features rapid-fire, high-yield overviews of three related CME sessions in a single hour. Each 15-minute segment is presented by a different expert, highlighting key takeaways and clinical pearls from their full-length lecture. The session concludes with 15 minutes of interactive Q&A with all speakers on stage.
    • Problem-based learning (PBL): Apply and practice key concepts from associated interactive lecture sessions. Review case studies and receive feedback from expert faculty.
    • Trailblazing education: Breakthroughs, strategies and fresh perspectives—these small-group, sponsored sessions deliver insights that will elevate your practice and sharpen your impact in family medicine.
    • Med talk: Get sharp, actionable ideas in just 15 minutes from leading experts in The Xchange that are designed to power your practice and spark new thinking.
    • Satellite CME symposium: Earn extra CME credit with noncommercial scientific sessions independently developed and AAFP-accredited.
    • Clinical procedure workshops: Observe as expert faculty demonstrate procedures, followed by hands-on practice of procedural techniques. These sessions run for two to four hours. Separate fee and registration required
    • Solution sessions: Power up your practice in 45 minutes with solution experts at The Xchange.

Download and log in to the AAFP Events app

While on site, chances are you’ll be hopping from the exhibit hall to educational sessions and maybe to lunch or a food truck or two. During the event, the best way to navigate is via the AAFP Events app, which can be downloaded on your phone’s Apple or Google Play stores.

The app features a full schedule of events with their location within the conference center as well as a map. Additionally, you can save events to create your own customized calendar and roadmap for where you need to go. The FMX app is available for download before FMX, and you can start adding items to your schedule right now.

Familiarize yourself with the convention center

FMX 2025 is located in sunny California at the Anaheim Convention Center. As the largest convention center on the West Coast, there is over 1.8 million square feet of enclosed space in the complex.

You don’t have to be an expert in navigating such a space, and there will be signage and AAFP employees happy to help you find your way. But wrapping your head around the center can help set your mind at ease. Thankfully, the Anaheim Convention Center website has maps and even a 3D tour. Check it out!

    Frequently asked questions about FMX

Our FMX team hears some questions regularly—here are some of the common ones, and what we tell attendees:

    What do I wear?

There’s no official dress code to FMX, and you’ll see a wide range of clothing styles. Out top tip is to pack comfy shoes. You’ll be doing a lot of walking.

    How do sessions work?

Sessions are set up in ballrooms and other conference rooms at the events center. Most sessions are open-ended—just show up and learn! You can find a full schedule in the FMX app.

    Who are the keynote speakers?

As part of your conference programming, FMX offers you three keynote sessions Oct. 6, 7, and 8 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

    • Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, Monday, Oct. 6: The 19th and 21st U.S. surgeon general and a national voice for mental health and human connection, Dr. Murthy isn’t just imagining the future of health care—he’s calling on family physicians to help lead it.

Is there family medicine gear for purchase?

Of course! The Fam Med Merch Shop has the latest gear, with tees, sweatshirts and more. Popular styles do sell out, so stop by earlier rather than later!
