AAFPs 2025 Future conference, FMIG Summit

Browse the resources below to support outreach, presentations and student engagement.

FMIG leaders play a key role in promoting family medicine and engaging fellow medical students. Explore these communication tools to recruit members, share your message and strengthen your FMIG’s impact.

Tips for an effective presentation

As an FMIG leader, it starts with you. You’re inspired to lead and energized to help guide students toward family medicine. Here’s how to capture and convey that enthusiasm:

  • Be a storyteller

Family medicine has a story to tell, and it includes yours. Use personal narratives and reflections, as well as research to illuminate key points.

  • Mix it up!

Use video and audio clips to enhance your presentation. Consider posters, props and audience participation.

  • Don’t leave ‘em empty-handed

Give your group something physical to take with them—a brochure or handout with more information about your FMIG and how to join.

  • Get feedback, then iterate

Ask attendees to complete a post-presentation evaluation online. Find out what they’d like more of to help shape future sessions.

Resources for meetings

The AAFP offers numerous communications tools to help FMIG leaders, members and students understand any number of compelling topics before, during and after the presentation.

Let’s start with informational resources that you can display or hand out.

Videos and webinars

Sometimes you just need to see and hear it for yourself, and the AAFP provides a wealth of videos and webinars to inspire you and your members. Send a video to members in advance of a session to set the table and spark ideas. Use video clips during your presentation to engage students and highlight key points. Encourage members to watch AAFP videos for topics they’d like to see discussed in future meetings.

Podcasts

We get it—you’re busy. Medical school students and faculty have enormous demands on their time, and the Inside Family Medicine podcast is a great way to get inspiration on the go. Each episode features interviews with people who have unique perspectives on the specialty. After your talk, send episode links to students who you think will connect with these stories.
