Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) network national coordinator

If you’re an active FMIG participant, the national coordinator position is your chance to strengthen FMIGs at all levels.

The student in this position will oversee the national Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) Network student leadership team. This student leadership opportunity means you’ll support and facilitate the work of the FMIG Network regional coordinators and other student organizations across the country and at some international medical schools.

The AAFP established the national FMIG Network to improve communication among FMIGs, share best practices and better connect FMIGs with AAFP support.

Important details

  • Application deadline: Preferred by July 24, 2026 but will be accepted through 5 p.m., Aug. 1, 2026

  • Term: Aug. 2, 2026 – Aug. 1, 2027

  • Prerequisites required: None (FMIG involvement preferred)

  • Funding: Travel covered according to AAFP Travel Policy; a per diem covers expenses to travel to and attend the meeting, including lodging and food

Position responsibilities

  • Leads monthly virtual meetings with the national FMIG Network student leadership team

  • Represents the national FMIG Network and AAFP to other student organizations through presentations and meetings

  • Serve as a member of the AAFP Commission on Education (COE), the COE Subcommittee on Resident and Student Issues, and the COE Subcommittee on FUTURE Planning

  • Support and facilitate the work of the FMIG Network coordinators and liaisons by maintaining communication

  • Strengthen FMIGs on the local, state, and national levels

  • Assists in activity/information coordination of all FMIG leaders

  • Plan and lead FMIG Network Student Leader Orientation in January

  • Provides input into planning FUTURE, the AAFP’s national conference for medical students and residents

  • Plan and host FMIG Leadership programming at FUTURE

  • Meets with AAFP staff to ensure that projects are on track and plan for upcoming projects

Candidates for this position are elected at FUTURE. Candidates should plan to attend the entirety of the conference. Candidates are required to be nominated at the conference, deliver a 2- to 3-minute speech, participate in a candidate Q&A and, if elected, participate in a new officer orientation Saturday afternoon of the conference.
