Student Delegate to the American Medical Association
It’s your chance to represent family medicine students in national healthcare conversations.
Represent family medicine and the AAFP at the American Medical Association’s two annual business meetings and shape policy in the house of medicine. The AAFP supports two medical student members to serve as delegate and alternate delegate to the AMA Medical Student Section. Through the year-long term these two members will share delegate and alternate roles.

Funding: Travel expenses are reimbursed according to AAFP policy
Position responsibilities
The AMA House of Delegates (HOD) annually allocates delegate positions to state and specialty societies based on the number of their members that are also AMA members. The allocation is announced on or before February 1 of each year, and the delegate count is adjusted accordingly.
Depending on the delegation size, there will be an opportunity for one MSS representative to also serve as a HOD delegate for the Annual and Interim meetings that year. This additional responsibility will require two or three extra days of service at the AMA HOD meeting.
Participate in the live business sessions of the AMA Medical Student Section conducted during the term of service, including virtual business such as reference committee hearings
Consider all business before the AMA MSS at each meeting and determine how to act on that business based on the policies of the AAFP and interests of AAFP student members
Research items of interest to family medicine, the AAFP, and its student members to bring an informed opinion to business discussion
Participate in a caucus of AAFP delegates to the AMA MSS, Resident Fellow Section, and Young Physician Section in preparation for the AMA Interim Meeting and the AMA Annual Meeting
Possibility of serving as an AAFP delegate to the AMA House of Delegates during one meeting each term
Applications for this position are reviewed by the AAFP Resident and Student Leadership Screening Committee and appointed by the AAFP Board of Directors. Applicants will be notified by September 30, 2026.

- Participation form signed by medical school dean’s office
- Support form completed by your AAFP chapter (state or constituent chapter)
