Peer review is a foundational component of the editorial process for American Family Physician (AFP), and we are grateful for the work reviewers do to help us develop excellent content. The clinical review articles published in each issue undergo rigorous peer review before their acceptance for publication. This type of review process is a hallmark of a highly respected, accurate, and credible journal. Each article is scrutinized by several reviewers, including at least one family physician, two topic experts (family physicians or specialists), and two medical editors. To facilitate candid comments and objectivity, the peer review system is double-blinded (ie, authors do not know reviewers’ identities, and reviewers do not know authors’ names). Reviewers are asked to provide detailed, constructive critiques, as well as comment on the paper’s authoritativeness and its documentation of a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to the subject. These evaluations are communicated to the authors and incorporated into revisions, ultimately strengthening the article and enhancing the learning of AFP’s readers.

The AFP Reviewers’ Guide provides information for active and prospective peer reviewers, including details on how to obtain CME credit for peer review, tips for effective reviews, and instructions on how to register to become an AFP reviewer. We highly recommend that first-time reviewers work with a mentor, which could include a colleague with authorship experience, or a faculty member, department chair, or residency director. Please consider mentoring a new reviewer and encourage specialist colleagues with whom you regularly collaborate to consider reviewing for AFP.
