Grand Hyatt Washington | Washington, DC

A record number of AAFP members attended the Family Medicine Advocacy Summit in 2025.

Welcome to the 2026 Family Medicine Advocacy Summit (FMAS), AAFP’s premier advocacy event bringing together family physicians, residents, students, and advocates from across the country to shape the future of health care.

Over three energizing days, you’ll hear directly from national policy leaders, sharpen your advocacy skills, connect with colleagues from every corner of the country, and take your message to Capitol Hill.

Whether this is your first FMAS or your tenth, this page will help you prepare for a successful and impactful experience in Washington, DC.

FMAS 2026 policy priorities

Every year, FMAS attendees bring the voice of family medicine directly to Capitol Hill by advocating for timely, patient-centered policy solutions that strengthen primary care and improve health outcomes nationwide.

The 2026 FMAS policy priorities focus on reducing barriers to care, supporting the physician workforce, and ensuring patients can access the care they need when they need it most.

Chronic Care Management Improvement Act (H.R. 8261) | Factsheet

Family physicians care for patients with complex chronic conditions every day, yet Medicare cost-sharing requirements can prevent patients from accessing ongoing care management services. FMAS attendees will advocate for policies that improve access to chronic care management and support proactive, team-based care for Medicare beneficiaries.

H-1Bs for Physicians and Healthcare Workers Act (H.R. 7961) | Factsheet

Communities across the country continue to face growing physician shortages, particularly in rural and underserved areas. FMAS attendees will advocate for modernized visa pathways that help internationally trained physicians practice in high-need communities and expand access to primary care.

Each attendee will receive a folder at registration containing leave-behind materials, policy factsheets, and talking points. They will also be available in the Advocacy Associates app.

Medicare Advantage Improvement Act (S. 4384 / H.R. 8375) | Factsheet

Prior authorization requirements and lack of transparency within Medicare Advantage continue to create unnecessary barriers to medically necessary care. FMAS attendees will urge Congress to strengthen oversight, improve accountability, and reduce administrative burden on physicians and patients.

AAFP has partnered with Advocacy Associates to coordinate all congressional meetings for Advocacy Day on Tuesday, June 16.

Advocacy Associates staff will be available onsite on Monday, June 15 from 12 – 4 PM to assist with questions, schedule updates, troubleshooting, or last-minute meeting changes.

FMAS 2026 will take place at the Grand Hyatt Washington, conveniently located in the heart of downtown DC and within walking distance of Capitol Hill, restaurants, museums, and Metro access.

Please note that the hotel bar at the Grand Hyatt will be closed for renovations during FMAS.

To help attendees make the most of their time in Washington, the AAFP Government Relations team has curated a list of recommended restaurants, bars, and gathering spots located near the hotel.

Washington, DC will host several major events and celebrations during the summer of 2026, including activities connected to the United States’ 250th anniversary and FIFA World Cup celebrations on and around the National Mall.

Attendees should anticipate increased tourism, heavier traffic patterns, road closures, and additional congestion throughout parts of downtown DC and near Capitol Hill. Please allow extra time for transportation throughout the Summit, particularly on Advocacy Day.

FMAS Scarf and Tie

One of the most recognizable traditions at FMAS is our Advocacy Day scarves and ties.

Each attendee will receive a complimentary FMAS scarf or tie to wear during congressional meetings on Tuesday. These items symbolize the unity, visibility, and collective voice of family medicine advocates on Capitol Hill.

We encourage all attendees to wear their FMAS scarf or tie during Hill visits to showcase the strength of family medicine advocacy nationwide.

Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill

Advocacy Day is the centerpiece of FMAS.

On Tuesday, attendees from across the country will meet with lawmakers and congressional staff to share the story of family medicine and advocate for policies that strengthen primary care and improve patient care.

No prior advocacy experience is required. Your voice and perspective as a family physician, resident, student, or advocate matter.

Please be sure to:

  • Review your congressional meeting schedule in the Advocacy Associates app
  • Familiarize yourself with FMAS talking points and leave-behind materials
  • Allow extra time for Capitol security screening
  • Wear your FMAS scarf or tie during meetings

AAFP staff will be available throughout the day to provide support and answer questions.

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to Capitol Hill on Tuesday.

The Capitol complex is within walking distance of the Grand Hyatt Washington. Many attendees choose to walk, while others use Metro or rideshare services such as Uber or Lyft.

Please plan ahead and allow extra travel time before your meetings.

The U.S. House of Representatives is currently projected to be in recess during FMAS. While some attendees may meet directly with lawmakers, most meetings are expected to take place with congressional staff.

Congressional staff play a critical role in shaping policy and advising members of Congress. These meetings remain highly valuable and impactful.

  • Business or business casual attire for conference sessions
  • Professional attire for Capitol Hill meetings
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Layers for varying room temperatures

  • Government-issued photo ID for Capitol access
  • Phone charger or portable battery pack
  • Notebook or tablet for taking notes
  • Refillable water bottle

Washington, DC is typically warm and humid in June, so we recommend dressing comfortably and planning accordingly.

And no need to bring your white coat. FMAS scarves and ties will help attendees stand out on Capitol Hill.

Dining and group gatherings

Looking for a place to connect with colleagues after sessions? How are a few attendee favorites located near the Grand Hyatt:

  • Zaytinya | A vibrant Mediterranean restaurant by Jose Andres, ideal for sharing plates with a group.
  • Succotash | A bold take on Southern cuisine in a stunning setting – great for a memorable night out.
  • The Hamilton | A DC favorite with an expansive menu and plenty of space for larger groups.
  • The Smith | An energetic American brasserie with a lively atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a full day.
