    Use your passion for safe, equitable obstetric care to train others when you become an ALSO Approved Instructor. Learn how to guide medical colleagues through an ALSO® course to provide essential lifesaving care during pregnancy-related emergencies.

    This half-day course is offered to anyone with a current ALSO status and covers:

    • Adult learning theory and effective feedback
    • Facilitation of constructive group discussion
    • Hands-on role-play via maternal-fetal manikins
    • Answering questions and dealing with conflicts at small-group workstations
    • Evaluating course participants

    Upon achieving Approved Instructor status, you’ll join a supportive Instructor community to help you stay current on this lifesaving education.

    At the end of this course, you will be able to:

    • Discuss educational tools that can be used when giving feedback to ALSO® course participants.
    • Describe how to assist participants in dealing with questions and conflicts that can occur during the workstations.
    • Demonstrate teaching capabilities by providing hands-on role-play utilizing maternal-fetal manikins along with timely feedback in order to adapt teaching methods to various situations.
    • Demonstrate the ability to facilitate group discussion, as well as consider ways to implement faculty and learner feedback to enhance the educational experience. (SRD)
    1. Attend an ALSO Instructor Course to earn ALSO Instructor Candidate status.
    2. Within one year of taking this course, teach at an ALSO or BLSO Course while an Advisory Faculty observes and recommends you for approval on the course dashboard.
    3. Once approved, you will receive an email with a link to your Approved Instructor wallet card in your AAFP Account.
    4. Your status period lasts three years provided you meet the following requirements:
      1. Teach at least two times at an ALSO or BLSO course.
      2. Complete each edition of the Online Instructor Renewal Course (updated every three years).

    If you meet these requirements, your status will automatically renew.

    If you don’t meet these requirements, your status will expire and you must attend new ALSO and ALSO Instructor courses.

    The AAFP has reviewed ALSO Instructor Course and deemed it acceptable for up to 3.25 AAFP Prescribed credit. Term of Approval is from 8/24/2026 to 8/24/2026. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    AMA/AAFP Equivalency - Providers may choose to include the following in addition to the AAFP credit statement:

    AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

    CME activities approved for AAFP credit are recognized by the AOA as equivalent to AOA Category 2 credit.
