Electronic health records (EHR) usability burden

When EHR systems aren't easy to use, it can cause frustration and contribute to burnout.

Research from the American Medical Association (AMA) shows family physicians are among those who spend the most time on EHR—7.3 hours for every eight hours scheduled with patients. That’s the fourth-highest of any specialty. The study also found family physicians spending several hours of personal time per week on EHR and e-mail tasks.

That’s why the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) is always working on solutions to improve the EHR experience for our members.

What the AAFP is doing to help with electronic health records

The EHR is a cornerstone of health information technology and a critical tool for improving patient health and health care delivery. Widespread use of EHR technology promises to transform the delivery of care and the development of public health initiatives. But getting to less administrative complexity won't come without complications. The Academy carefully weighs prospective regulations and policies to ensure shifts in the health IT landscape ultimately benefit family physicians.
