The AAFP Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education (AEGME) honors a select number of residents for their exemplary patient care, their interpersonal relationships with patients, physicians and faculty, and their demonstrated leadership and community involvement.
Since its establishment in 1952, nearly 1,000 second-year residents have received this distinguished honor. Here’s why you should apply to join them.

Meet the AEGME winners
The following family medicine residents were selected for their exemplary patient care, their interpersonal relationships with patients, physicians and faculty, and their demonstrated leadership and community involvement.
These 12 men and women are truly health care leaders.
Daniel Armounfelder, MD, MPH
Residency: Memorial Hospital of South Bend Family Medicine Residency Program, Indiana
Medical School: Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis
Dr. Armounfelder considers catching a postoperative hemorrhage by performing a focused assessment with sonography in trauma (FAST) exam with point-of-care ultrasound as his most important professional accomplishment to date. In addition to inpatient care, his professional interests include street medicine and addiction medicine. Favorite personal pastimes include spending time with his wife and friends, canning, listening to audiobooks and playing with his cats. After completing residency, Dr. Armounfelder plans to work at a federally qualified health center where he can continue to care for underserved populations. He would also like to remain actively involved in street medicine.
Priscilla Auguste, MD, MHS
Residency: Mercy Health St. Luke’s Family Medicine Residency Program, Perrysburg, Ohio
Medical School: Ross University School of Medicine, Portsmouth, Dominica
Dr. Auguste’s most significant professional accomplishment to date has been helping to establish the Association of Black Family Medicine Physicians (ABFMP), including building the ABFMP’s website and bringing together minority students, residents and attendings at a social networking mixer during FUTURE (formerly National Conference) for the past three years. In addition to working with the ABFMP, her professional interests include developing materials that residents and students can use to educate patients about lifestyle medicine and volunteering in her community to help populations that have been made vulnerable. Outside of work, she enjoys spending quality time with her family, hiking at metro and national parks, building architectural designs with Lego bricks and painting. Following residency, Dr. Auguste looks forward to taking a brief vacation! She also plans to transition into a faculty position at a program in Florida that allows her to oversee students and residents in both hospital and clinic settings.
Mark Bugada, DO
Residency: OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Family Medicine Residency
Medical School: Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dublin
Dr. Bugada’s most notable professional accomplishments to date include receiving the AAFP Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education, earning the OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital Community Impact Award and being named Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine’s 2023 Student DO of the Year. His professional interests center on musculoskeletal medicine—particularly procedures and osteopathic manipulative treatment—and graduate medical education. His community engagement efforts include providing primary care services for a local homeless shelter and working with the camp he helped establish to introduce high school students to the medical field. In his personal life, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, playing soccer and golf, listening to audiobooks, learning Italian and working on home improvement projects. After residency, Dr. Bugada plans to complete an additional year of training in osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine and then practice both family medicine and neuromusculoskeletal medicine. He would also like to get involved with a local medical school or residency program.
Del Carter, MD
Residency: Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Family Medicine Residency Program, Florida
Medical School: University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville
Commissioning as a captain into the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps is Dr. Carter’s most important professional achievement to date, and he will serve on a part-time basis following residency. His areas of professional interest include health policy and advocacy, leadership and hospital medicine. In his free time, he enjoys working on cars and motorcycles, traveling, going to the movies and watching Florida Gators basketball. Dr. Carter’s post-residency plans include working as a nighttime hospitalist (nocturnist) in a private practice setting in Florida and continuing his leadership involvement through the Florida Medical Association and the Florida Academy of Family Physicians’ Government Relations Committee.
Amelia Chapman, DO, MBA
Residency: OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Family Medicine Residency
Medical School: Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Cleveland
Dr. Chapman’s most important professional accomplishments to date are receiving the AAFP Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education, serving as chief resident and developing a lifestyle medicine curriculum that prepares residents for board certification from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Other professional pursuits include advancing research and simulation in medicine, applying the health care leadership skills she gained through her MBA program, and contributing to public health efforts, such as COVID-19 vaccination. Away from work, she enjoys playing the drums, reading, hiking, golfing and swimming. After residency, Dr. Chapman plans to pursue a sports medicine fellowship with the goals of serving as a team physician at the collegiate and professional levels, contributing to injury prevention research and eventually becoming a fellowship director. She also has a strong interest in the intersection of women’s health and sports medicine, with a focus on optimizing performance in female athletes, promoting wellness during pregnancy and preventing injuries in postmenopausal women.
Ryunosuke Hisatomi, MD
Residency: Louisiana State University Health Shreveport Family Medicine Residency Program
Medical School: University of the Ryukyus Faculty of Medicine, Okinawa, Japan
Dr. Hisatomi considers receiving the 2025 American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Resident Scholarship to be his most significant professional accomplishment to date. This recognition reflects his work during residency, including providing coverage for local, collegiate and professional sports teams; conducting research on heat stress among firefighters; and contributing to scholarly activity by authoring a textbook chapter, publishing peer-reviewed case reports and presenting posters at national conferences. His professional interests include medical education, research and outpatient nonoperative sports medicine with a focus on advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound. Building an academic career that integrates all of these interests is his long-term goal. Outside of clinical and academic pursuits, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to cafés for coffee, watching NBA games, volunteering at sports events and traveling. Following residency, Dr. Hisatomi plans to pursue a primary care sports medicine fellowship and hopes to contribute to advancing primary care sports medicine in Japan.
Ishak Hossain, MD
Residency: Saint Louis University Family Medicine Residency Program, Missouri
Medical School: University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Oklahoma City
Dr. Hossain’s most important professional accomplishment to date is serving as chief resident of the Saint Louis University Family Medicine Residency Program. His professional interests include advancing health equity, supporting nonprofits, including the anti-racist systems change organization Forward Through Ferguson, and participating in advocacy efforts that range from grassroots organizing to lobbying. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer in local amateur leagues and pickup games around the city, participating in chess tournaments and watching sports—especially cheering for the Oklahoma City Thunder! After completing residency, Dr. Hossain looks forward to finding opportunities to teach and to advocate for underserved populations.
Hina Rmsha Alfia Khan, MBBS
Residency: Mayo Clinic Family Medicine Residency, La Crosse, Wisconsin
Medical School: Deccan College of Medical Sciences and Research Center, Hyderabad, India
Serving on the La Crosse Community Advisory Committee is Dr. Khan’s most significant professional accomplishment to date because it allows her to collaborate with local organizations to improve health literacy, strengthen community resilience and expand access to care—especially for populations that have been marginalized. In addition to serving underserved communities through volunteer work, she is passionate about empowering future health care leaders by teaching and mentoring medical students. She is also dedicated to building mentorship networks that connect single mothers with education, career opportunities and health care resources and to championing career development for women from racial and ethnic minority groups. In her personal life, she enjoys traveling, hiking, cooking, reading and spending time with family. Following residency, Dr. Khan aspires to provide compassionate care to underserved communities while also mentoring and teaching the next generation of medical professionals.
Briana Krewson, DO
Residency: University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Family Medicine and Community Health
Medical School: Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Pennsylvania
Dr. Krewson is passionate about delivering excellent, humanistic patient care and considers this her most meaningful professional achievement to date. In particular, her professional interests include lifestyle medicine, narrative-based medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment. Beyond her medical career, she enjoys spending time with her partner David, their rescue dog Jake, and her family and friends. Journaling, vegetable gardening, traveling, and staying active through exercise and yoga are some of her other favorite pastimes. After completing residency, Dr. Krewson plans to pursue a fellowship in academic family medicine at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, MD
Residency: Family Medicine Residency Program at Medical City Fort Worth, Texas
Medical School: University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Kingston, Jamaica
One of Dr. Lambert-Johnson’s proudest professional achievements to date is developing a clinic guide to help medical students at the University of North Texas in Fort Worth navigate the family medicine rotation. In collaboration with the university’s Division of Academic Innovation, she is now transforming the guide into an interactive digital curriculum that reflects her passion for learner-centered design. In addition to advancing family medicine through innovative curriculum development, her professional pursuits include mentoring students and residents and volunteering with initiatives that support underserved and military communities. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling with her family, cooking authentic Jamaican dishes, conquering escape rooms and learning Spanish. Dr. Lambert-Johnson’s post-residency plans include practicing inpatient medicine and pursuing a career in academic medicine that allows her to care for patients, shape curriculum, mentor residents and lead system-level initiatives.
Eduardo Rivé Lockwood, MD
Residency: OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, Columbus
Medical School: Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, Dayton, Ohio
Establishing an ongoing relationship with the Columbus City Council to explore ways to better serve the Hispanic/Latinx community is among Dr. Rivé Lockwood’s most important professional accomplishments to date. In addition to this advocacy work, his professional interests include integrating point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) into office-based practice, advancing medical Spanish, and teaching and mentoring medical students and residents. Away from work, he enjoys participating in collaborative storytelling through tabletop role-playing games and reading science fiction, fantasy and historical fiction. Other personal interests include attending concerts, collecting vinyl LPs, and baking and cooking favorite foods from his home island of Puerto Rico. After residency, Dr. Rivé Lockwood plans to continue serving the Hispanic/Latinx population in central Ohio, incorporate POCUS into his practice, and contribute to graduate medical education by expanding the POCUS curriculum and working with students and residents.
Sonal Kristin Singh, MD
Residency: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Family and Community Medicine, Columbus
Medical School: St. George's University School of Medicine, Grenada, West Indies
Providing care at Ohio State Outpatient Care East—a federally qualified health center serving patients who have been made vulnerable—is Dr. Singh’s most important professional accomplishment to date. She strives to create a safe, respectful and empowering environment for people facing health inequities and considers it a privilege to help patients live healthier, more fulfilling lives. Other professional pursuits include serving as the family medicine representative to the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine’s Sports Medicine Resident Council and as the resident director on the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors. In her personal life, she enjoys trying new sports, re-learning Spanish, participating in community theater, traveling to new states with friends and family, and fostering mentorship and camaraderie through the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Dr. Singh is currently pursuing an MBA and plans to complete a primary care sports medicine fellowship after residency. She intends to practice both sports medicine and primary care while continuing her involvement in research, advocacy, mentorship and humanism in medicine.
