It took an incredible amount of dedication to become a family medicine resident. We’re here to help every step in your residency experience and as you transition into practice as a new family physician.

A resident membership for PGY1, PGY2, PGY3 and Chief residents includes board prep programs, education conferences, free professional resources on topics like coding, billing, finding a job and negotiating contracts, plus community of peers and mentors.

AAFP resident membership types and dues

Eligibility:

  • Physicians training in ACGME-accredited three-year family medicine residencies
  • Graduates of ACGME family medicine residencies immediately extending training or entering fellowships

Dues:

2027 national resident membership dues are $30 annually (July 1–June 30)

AAFP resident members also must pay chapter dues. View this resident dues chart to find your state chapter information.

Important note before you apply: Residency programs often sign up their residents and pay their AAFP resident membership dues. Before applying, check with your residency program or contact the AAFP Member Resource Center at aafp@aafp.org to confirm you don’t already have an AAFP membership.

After your residency or extended training is completed, we automatically transfer resident members to a complimentary active membership through the end of the calendar year.

Eligibility:

Transitional membership is for students who have graduated from allopathic or osteopathic medical schools but haven’t yet matched into residency.

  • The medical school must be (a) accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association's Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (AOA COCA), or (b) listed as operational in the then-current edition of the World Directory of Medical Schools.
  • Eligibility for transitional membership will terminate on December 31 of the second full calendar year following the year in which you graduated from an allopathic or osteopathic medical school or upon the member’s earlier enrollment in a residency program.

Dues:

2026 national transitional membership dues are $125 (January 1–December 31)

Transitional members also must pay chapter dues.
