Help plan FUTURE and serve as speaker of the National Congress of Family Medicine Residents.

The resident in this leadership position plays an important role in planning education activities for family medicine residents. They work closely with the student conference chair to organize FUTURE, the national conference for the future of family medicine, as well as bring the resident perspective to AAFP education committee and National Congress of Family Medicine Resident conversations.

Medical students and family medicine residents come to FUTURE from around the country every year for connections and experiences that define their medical careers.

  • Application due: Preferred by July 24, 2026, but will be accepted through 5 p.m. CT on July 31, 2026

  • Term: Aug. 1, 2026-Aug. 31, 2027

  • Prerequisites: Yes

  • Funding: Funding: Reimbursement of actual travel expenses for airfare, or for mileage at the current IRS rate and parking expenses, up to the cost of one full coach airline ticket, shuttle or cab expenses to and from the airport, and regular per diem (currently $450) for each meeting and travel day (maximum of five days).

Position responsibilities

  • Serves as an official host at the conference
    • Emcees Main Stage sessions (as applicable)
    • Chairs the Resident and Student Congresses respectively
  • Ensures efficient, effective operation of the business sessions and elections
    • Leads Virtual FUTURE Orientation (as applicable)
    • Assists with Candidate Forum Moderator’s Guide
    • Assists with Student & Resident Leader Recognition – Speaker & Vice Speaker Remarks
  • Serves as a member of the Subcommittee on FUTURE Education and Leadership (SFEL) to provide input on the programming for FUTURE
    • Assists with the selection of workshops
    • Evaluates the success/effectiveness of the conference, with particular attention focused on the educational elements and the congress operations, and identifies ways to reinforce and strengthen upcoming conferences
  • Serves as a member of the AAFP Commission on Education (COE)
  • Serves on the Subcommittee on Resident and Student Issues (SRSI)
  • Serves as a member of the Resident/Student Leader Screening/Selection Committee
    • Manages the Screening Committee for resident and student member appointments to various AAFP positions as well as selected positions in other organizations
  • Serves as a member of the Cross-Commission Work Group on Resident and Student Issues
  • Coordinates and makes decisions regarding student activities throughout the year

Candidates for this position are nominated and elected at FUTURE. They should plan to attend the entire conference.

After they’re nominated, candidates deliver a two- to three-minute speech and participate in a candidate Q&A.

The winner of the election participates in a new officer orientation on the Saturday afternoon of FUTURE.
