Dive into theory and practice to help guide medical colleagues through an ALSO® course—all with the goal to provide essential lifesaving care during pregnancy-related emergencies.
While clinical experience is vital, effective teachers have additional skills. This half-day course gives you the tools to teach and covers:
- Adult learning theory and effective feedback
- Facilitation of constructive group discussion
- Hands-on role-play via maternal-fetal manikins
- Answering questions and dealing with conflicts at small-group workstations
- Evaluating course participants

Course details
At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:
- Plan to utilize demonstrated educational tools that can be used when giving feedback to ALSO course participants.
- Identify strategies to assist participants with questions and conflicts that can occur during the workstations.
- Develop plans to demonstrate teaching competence in hands-on role-play utilizing maternal-fetal manikins, including providing timely feedback, and adaptation of teaching methods to various situations.
- Facilitate group discussion, and consider ways to implement faculty and learner feedback to enhance the educational experience.
- Facilitate a simulated group testing scenario from set up through team observation, debriefing and evaluation.
- Attend an ALSO Instructor Course to earn ALSO Instructor Candidate status.
- Within one year of taking this course, teach at an ALSO or BLSO Course while an Advisory Faculty observes and recommends you for approval on the course dashboard.
- Once approved, you will receive an email with a link to your Approved Instructor wallet card in your AAFP Account.
- Your status period lasts three years provided you meet the following requirements:
- Teach at least two times at an ALSO or BLSO course.
- Complete each edition of the Online Instructor Renewal Course (updated every three years).
If you meet these requirements, your status will automatically renew.
If you don’t meet these requirements, your status will expire and you must attend new ALSO and ALSO Instructor courses.
