Peer review is an essential and valuable process for American Family Physician (AFP), and we are grateful for the work reviewers do to help us develop sound content. Clinical review articles undergo a rigorous peer review process before their acceptance for publication. This type of review process is a hallmark of a highly respected, accurate, and credible journal. Every clinical review article is scrutinized by several reviewers, including at least one family physician, two topic experts (family physicians or specialists), and two medical editors. To facilitate candid comments and objectivity, the peer review system is double-blinded (ie, authors do not know reviewers’ identities, and reviewers do not know authors’ names). Reviewers are asked to provide detailed, constructive critiques, as well as comment on the paper’s authoritativeness and its documentation of a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to the subject. These suggestions are relayed to the authors, ultimately leading to a better article—a benefit to the author and to AFP and its readers. Each year, we recognize all peer reviewers for volunteering their time, and 222 people reviewed at least one AFP article in 2024. An archive of past AFP peer reviewers is available.
If you are interested in reviewing for AFP, please read the AFP Reviewers’ Guide for more information. Please also encourage specialist colleagues with whom you regularly collaborate to consider reviewing. We highly recommend that first-time reviewers find a mentor, which could include colleagues with authorship experience, department chairs and faculty, and residency directors. The AAFP provides authorized CME credit for peer review of journal manuscripts.
